The selection of plants mentioned here may not strictly fall under the horticultural definition of Alpines, but they are more accurately dwarf perennials. This category includes plants that are less than 30cm in height and thrive well in my personal Rock Garden, hence they are categorized as Alpines for the purpose of this website.
Alpines are typically plants that flourish in high-altitude areas above the tree line, where they endure harsh conditions, low temperatures, limited growing seasons, and dryness. Some of the plants mentioned here are originally from the alpine regions of Europe but have gradually adapted to New Zealand's conditions over an extended period, through a process of natural selection and breeding.
All the plants detailed here are robust and hardy. If any plant variety requires extensive care in my nursery, it is unfortunately relegated to the compost bin.
